Fixing Computers

I graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. More important than my degree is the fact that while I was in college, I spent nearly 4 years working computer tech support. College students who aren't interested in computers other than music downloads and email can wreak havoc on their computers. I saw literally hundreds of computers that had all sorts of issues.

Of these issues, very few were actually hardware related, most were software issues, such as Spyware or Viruses, and were fixed with a few simple free programs. I have tried many different software options for cleaning and maintaining computers, and have settled on certain programs for certain problems.

When people hear that I was a Computer Science major, or that I work in IT now, I often hear "I cant' stand my computer," or "Yeah my computer is horribly slow, I need to buy a new one, what should I get?" I then proceed to tell them all the things they can do either to clean up their computer or what they should look at for a replacement computer. I realized that I would go through the same list of things with people almost on a weekly basis. For each specific problem I had a specific dialog I would repeat to them.

Eventually I realized that if I wrote it all down and put it in a webpage, I could simply refer them to the webpage. This way they could fix their problems on their own at home instead of having to remember everything I tell them face to face.

Thats when I put together my Computer Advice website. Hopefully people will spread the word on the site and the number of people out there with computers bogged down with spyware and viruses will go down.
