World War II

My interest in World War II began with a video game i played years ago called "Aces over Europe". The game was an Air Combat game, in which you flew missions in a campaign that followed the timeline of World War II. The better you did on your missions, the better your side did in the campaign. Through the game i learned most of the major planes used in the war, and a lot about the locations and timeline of the war.

Through Movies, Documentaries, books, TV shows, and ther video games, i have learned a lot about World War II. Here are a few that i found good. I highly reccomend the following if you are interested in World War II.

For movies, some of the best World War II movies include "Saving Private Ryan", which details the Normandy Invasion and shortly after it, and "A Bridge Too Far", which follows the doomed "Operation: Market Garden".

If you have extended cable (up in the 200's), "The Military Channel" (Formerly "Discovery: Wings") always has great World War II documentaries. You can also find great documentaries on the history channel.

A few years ago, the author Stephen Ambrose wrote a book called "Band of Brothers", in which he wrote the story of "Easy Company", a company in the 101st airborne division that played major roles in just about every major area of the european theater of war. He wrote the book based on interviews he had with members of Easy Company who are still alive. If you are looking for a good book to read, You should pick this one up.

Shortly after the book "Band of Brothers" was written, HBO picked it up as a 10 part miniseries of the same name. The miniseries is very true to the book, and a few of the episodes were even directed by Stephen Spielberg (who directed Saving Private Ryan). The miniseries is available on dvd for around $60, and you can rent it from most rental stores. If you havnt already seen it, i highly reccomend it.

If you are into video games, check out my review of the Massively Multiplayer Online Game "World War II Online". It is the most realistic game out there when it comes to re-creating World War II.
